Frederick Nathaniel “Toots” Hibbert has passed away on September 11, 2020 in the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, according to a post on his official twitter account. He was 77 years old.

Hibbert reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 after the release of his latest and last album titled GOT TO BE TOUGH. From there, his condition worsened until he was placed in a coma by doctors, which is done to help the body heal, however, he didn’t make it, according to Pitchfork. The family didn’t mention an official cause of death.
Toots Hibbert was the frontman and co-founder of the Toots and the Maytals that was formed in 1960s. He is considered one of the most influential artists of of Reggae music because of how even more popular the sound became under him, even when he used in the single “Do the Reggay”.
Toots Hibbert was named by Rolling Stone as one of 100 Greatest Singers in 2010, and Toots and the Maytals holds the record for the most number one songs in Jamaica.
